Ladbrook 9.4.18

As I write this it now seems that the mere fact we managed to play at Ladbrook is a minor miracle,  snatched between deluges of either rain or snow.  Deluges that returned on Monday night with a vengeance,  to deliver yet another inch of water that closed Edgbaston;  thus making the cancellation of Tuesday’s event the eighth this season. Even Little Aston and Sutton Coldfield were on 18 temporary greens.  Fortunately,  Edgbaston is keen to have us back and I will be publishing two more autumn dates, at this much favoured venue, soon.

I felt especially sorry for Tom Lowe, a lovely man who plays off three and had driven all the way up from south of Bristol to play in both events. His small conciliation is a bottle of wine to drown his sorrows, in recognition of winning the longest drive on the 18th.

I have to admit to a mistake at Ladbrook, I decided on winter rules on the fairways and closely mown areas, and it should have been on the whole course.  Sorry.

Despite my mistake,  many said how much they had enjoyed this lovely course, which is scenic throughout and has some real thinking man’s golf holes, especially on the back nine.  I am also most impressed with the recent refurbishment of the lounge and bar area - very smart indeed!

Ever cheerful Brian Reynolds kindly filled in at the last minute to make up a team. After the round he said he would also like to step into the one remaining space at Edgbaston on Tuesday. ‘Yes’ said Brian. ‘I feel I haven’t let enough people down today - so I’ll have another go tomorrow’

Due to the soil moisture level there was little or no run on the course and the scores reflected this. Although depressed, it was once again tight at the top with only two points separating the top five teams, necessitating a back-nine count to determine the final placing.

Dave Yarranton’s score of 80 was nudged into fifth place by a better back nine from Lenny Poole’s team.

Third place with 81, went to the local contingent including club members Mick Flannaghan and Jolly Jack Badham (who confided in me that the level of his culinary expertise necessitates him eating out every night).

Mike Whitehouse’s team scored 82 but with 40 points on the back nine, it was only good enough for second.

Matt Harrison plays in a lot of Teetours events but rarely brings his lovely wife Angela with him. This week the couple brought their friends Mike and Linda Deeley with them. The presence of the girls clearly inspired the boys to greatness and it was super to see a mixed team take first prize.
