Forest of Arden 17.11.21

prev next

Although the temperature was lower than we were used to it was a beautifully sunny day and a good day for Autumn golf.

Mark Rose originally booked eight payers in to this event but unfortunately forgot to put it in his diary.  However, Mark is a true gentleman and, when his mistake was explained he immediately offered to pay for any unfilled places.

Fortunately,  thanks to eight single players wanting a day out, all spaces were filled.  Both Mark and I are grateful to the eight who joined up to make two amalgamated teams.

Although the greens were excellent as usual, there was no run on the fairways.  Coupled with this, it is a fact that cold balls don't perform with the same vigour as warm ones!  To compound the problem, the head green keeper was determined that everyone get their money's worth so the yellow tees were right at the back and the pins were at the back of the greens - It was driver to the par-3 18th!  The result was a much lower score tally than normal.

Regardless of this, much praise was given to the course and most precisely by Jim Oswald who declares this to be his favourite course because, in his own words: "Forest of Arden has threats from dog legs, where you have to drive away into space rather than try and cut the corner;  trees on the edges of fairways, which impede you if you take the wrong line and water, where a miss-hit shot finishes you off.  If you fail to choose the right line or fail to hit a clean shot, I feel it punished you hard. I like that."   - Well said Jim.
