Wollaton 5.11.21

prev next

Wollaton was in lovely condition - especially the greens. Sitting on a sandstone base, It is a great course for early and late season golf.  Even though there were 112 playing on a two-tee start, the pace of play was steady and all twenty eight teams were round in four hours twenty minutes.

However, this was not acceptable for one team, who unfortunately lost a bit of patience and teed off a little prematurely, without realising the team in front were still in range.

When it comes to safety, the golden rule in golf is exactly the same as skiing - You are responsible for everyone in front of you - no excuses!  And, if you occasionally make a mistake and land a ball very close to someone, without shouting a warning,  expect them to be upset with you;  it's only natural because you frightened them.

We've all done it at some stage in our golfing career and the problem is easily resolved: No matter how upset the offended party is you must always be exceptionally apologetic;  check that they are not injured;  and last but not least - always tell them to order a beer at the bar, when they get in and you will pay for it - you are only going to be nine minutes behind them.  You will find that the whole situation is defused for the price of a pint - Simple!

To play golf in such close proximity to a large herd of deer is a spectacular delight, regardless of the occasional necessary repair of a hoof mark on the green.  Please remember; it was a deer park long before the golf course was built.  I was told the stags were still dangerous and had recently taken a buggy to pieces.  The reason for this was that they had not yet finished rutting - which I found rather disappointing as I think I finished in about 1999!

Unusually at this event there were two teams tied for 3rd place because I couldn't draw a fag paper between them - Results below.
