Edgbaston 29.10.19

prev next

In the week before this event we saw Tewkesbury flooded, The Trent burst its banks at Repton and Branston Golf Club deciding whether or not to launch a canoeing section (allegedly).

Consequently, I have to say I was concerned about Edgbaston.  Especially given the deep thatch problem they had with the greens two years ago,  that lead to a retention of water and a distinctly soggy texture after a wet spell.

I need not have worried.  The work undertaken to address the thatch problem has worked wonders and the greens caught many out with their unexpected speed.

The course was dry and played well.

In the clubhouse, the finest bacon joints were hand carved to order, winning high praise from all.

Many had not played the course before and were delighted with their decision to come.

Mike Roberts birdied two par threes and hopefully the two bottles of wine will console him as his efforts were sadly not quite enough to lift the team from bottom place.

Fifth place went to an amalgamated team which contained 9 handicap Richard Garbett who launched a superb drive 290 yards down the tenth to secure the longest drive,  and 12 handicap Stuart Bond who won nearest the pin on the seventh.

Terry Hill and Mark Davis normally play with Terry’s brother and son. They were not available so I teamed them up with two 5 handicappers, Will Thompson and Martin Kirkbride.  The team gelled well to bring home and 80 points and third place.

Top slot was contested on a count back but the score was below the normal ninety odd we have come to expect at an Am-Am.  This was mainly attributable to some very interesting pin positions which prompted one or two players to question what had upset the head green keepers sex life!

We are booked to return to Edgbaston on May 13th next year for those who want to play this lovely Harry Colt gem.
