Hollinwell 24.10.22

prev next

After the deep disappointment of cancelling Lindrick last Thursday (for the second time this year!! - first snow, then rain.) and with more rain over the weekend, it was with some trepidation that I expected Hollinwell to go ahead on Monday.

To make sure I was not encouraging 88 players into a fools errand, I called in at Hollinwell on Sunday lunchtime.  Despite heavy rain that very morning, the clouds were parting, the greens were not flooded and the first few members were preparing to play.  What a phenomenal bit of geography and soil structure this golf golf course stands on!

By Monday, there was hardly a wet spot to be found.

It is easy for me to rain plaudits on this golf course but the feedback from the players says it all:

Steve Gee from Sutton Coldfield described it as "God's playground".

Paul Buntin sent the following email:

Hi Tony,

I just wanted to pop a quick email of thanks for Monday and the wonderful Hollinwell.

I have to say that when heading across from the Wirral on Sunday, and having our game on route cancelled due to the weather, I was worried that we would not get see Hollinwell in all its splendour.

Fortunately the weather passed and my 3 friends, who'd not played the course before, got to see what all the fuss I was making about Hollinwell. It certainly didn't disappoint.

It is truly a wonderful place to play golf; I always find the round going far too quickly and I start to plan a return as soon as possible!

With no run on the course it was playing it's length. Even off the yellow pots it is 6619 yards - that's 500 longer than Ladbrook Park.  Unsurprisingly, the scores were lower all round.

Lyndon Tyler's team edged on to the podium with a slightly better back nine and 84 points.  Steve Broderick's team were second - again on count back with 85, leaving Richard Lyon's team spraying the crown with Champagne.

Dan Elwell's team sponsor a young tour player - Jonathan Thompson.  I agreed with Dan that Jonathan could play on Monday off plus 5.  Normally I would not allow a Pro to win prizes in an amateur competition.  However The longest drive on the par 5 third hole was only 100 yards from the centre of the green. So it was only right that Jonathan took home the customary bottle of red wine (but then again, as he is six foot eight and four foot across the shoulders, who am I to deny him :-)
