Sunningdale 2023

prev next

Teetours second trip to the (probably) the best golf club in the world was another success enjoyed by all.  Fortunately we now seem to have a regular slot in the society calendar which means we will be coming back again in the last week of April 2024.

The weather wasn't brilliant on day one at The Berkshire but the greens held up well in the face of heavy downpours.  Day two's weather was much more clement and the magnificence of both Sunningdale courses was enjoyed by all.

Day three was at Ashridge this year.  The course is in the middle of the Ashridge Estate just north of Berkhamstead; the estate was originally owned by Henry V111 and he used it to house the daughter of Anne Boleyn who succeeded Henry as Elizabeth 1 (History lesson over).

Ashridge was an unknown commodity to most but greatly enjoyed by all.  In fact Alan Hope said he enjoyed it better than Woburn the previous year.  The food was exemplary. Any catering establishment that can produce thirty six perfect, cheese soufflé starters, at the same time, deserves high praise indeed.

Due to a cancellation, we drafted in some late replacements:

John Carolan drove down and back from Nottinghamshire in the day to play both courses at Sunningdale.

Martyn and Kathy Seal joined us for both the Berkshire and Sunningdale; a delightful couple from Ashby Golf Club, where they have honed their skills well as they were the outright winners on the Old Course on day two.

Ultimate accolade for the trip goes to my old friend and fellow Reptonian, Jonathan Avill.  Jonathan had already booked for this trip when he got roped in, by a group of friends and family, to run his first ever London Marathon the day before!!  He finished the marathon and they raised over thirty thousand pounds between them.  At the age of 57 he was a little tired by the time he got to us on the Monday but he stayed the course and wants to come back next year.
