Walmley 9.6.23

Last week we had 100 Coxmoor.

Last time we were at Walmley, over 100 played and thoroughly enjoyed the course, which was beautifully presented, in a fashion that has become normal here. For some strange reason we only had a 5 teams today.

Fortunately we are back at Walmley on

My eulogy to the course will not be repeated in this report because I have to tell you about a triumph over adversity that has finally produced a clubhouse, befitting of the lovely parkland course.

I was disappointed to hear that four years ago, the original plans to build a new one, together with a golf academy, had been refused planning permission.

The original 1960’s design was well passed it’s sell-by-date and was rapidly becoming obsolete.  However, the only options were to rebuild on the original footprint or completely refurbish  the existing structure.  Having decided on the latter, work began in March 2022.  At the point of near completion in March this year, the builders went bankrupt, leaving the members to finish work on the balcony themselves.  They have done a great job!

The enormous balcony is the most striking feature of the new structure.  It provides outside seating for over 50, with magnificent views over the course and the tree canopy far beyond; and all adjacent to two bars - what’s not to like!!

Furthermore, the balcony is fully waterproofed, thus producing a huge covered area to keep clubs dry in inclement conditions.

Firm, free-running fairways coupled with a warm, two-club wind made judging your tee shot interesting, especially on the dog-leg tenth.

The greens were firm, receptive and true but some of the pin positions made scoring difficult.

With only 5 teams and prizes to 3rd, plus 4 players with a two and three prize holes, you had to try hard to avoid taking a bottle home.  And with several bar-b-ques planned for the weekend there were many smiley faces leaving Walmley.

Many thanks for your support.
