Walmley 28.9.22

prev next

The presentation of Walmley's course on Wednesday was probably the best we have seen all season.

The greens were immaculate, the bunkers manicured, the tees and approaches hand-mown and every fairway beautifully defined. Even the holes were painted white.

Steve Carter, Walmley's omni-present director of golf was apologetic to the point of embarrassment for the condition of the clubhouse, which is being completely refurbished.

I felt sorry for Steve, and the committee at the club, because I know how much heartache they have all had over the last few years.  Original plans to build a new clubhouse, with a golf academy, were refused before the decision was made to make the best of the existing structure.  Steve planned our visit last year and was super confident that we would be welcomed into the new bar and dining room. - The best laid plans of mice and men!

Bacon rolls and coffee were served to all, in the temporary outside bar that was originally erected to cope with Covid. And afterwards the same area was full of much hilarity, post-match beer consumption and tales of missed putts.

it did not detract from the enjoyment of the day and the chance to play this super course in lovely autumn sunshine.  Fret ye not Walmley - we will be back next year, whatever state the clubhouse is in.
