Wollaton 11.2.22

prev next

We dropped on with the weather again at Wollaton.  By the time the first players teed off at 10am, the sun had burnt off any remnants of the slight overnight frost and warmed the course.

It’s always a joy to play winter golf when it’s dry under foot, which it certainly was. Remarkably, only the Sunday before, the course was closed due to the deluge of rain that had fallen, even too much for the fantastically well draining sandstone.

As always, the deer heard plays a wonderful cameo role at this city centre venue. Fortunately, the stags are not troublesome, as February is generally too cold for any testosterone fuelled activity (I know how they feel!!!)

It was really good to see so many friendly faces again after the Christmas break and always a delight to meet some new Teetours virgins.

A most happy and convivial atmosphere pervaded the clubhouse after the golf, as team mates chatted about the round and old friends were reunited.

For the first time at this event I tried my new system and printed bespoke cards for each team.  Unfortunately there appeared to be a slight syntax error in my spreadsheet which muddled up the stroke indices.  In my prize-giving speech, I apologised to all, declaring myself to be “chump of the day”.  However,  it was the same for everyone, there were no complaints and many declared it was good fun.

Obviously the greens are never going to be in peak condition in February.  However there couldn’t have been too much wrong as there were 16 twos recorded.  Second, third and fourth places were decided on a count-back between three teams on 94 and top slot on the podium was taken by Dave Long’s team on 96.

Many thanks

Tony.
